Mottetto Sanctorum Cyrilli, et Methudii

One of rare examples Cyrillo-Methodian veneration in the Baroque period is the Mottetto Sanctorum Cyrilli, et Methudii „Laudemus viros gloriosos“. It originates from the collection of St. James’ church in Brno and is currently kept in the Music department of the Moravian Museum. Its author is the imperial court composer Francesco Bartolomeo Conti and the piece of music was written on the occasion of St. Cyril and Methodius festivity in the St. Michaelis´ church in Vienna that used to be celebrated in 1708-1783 every year in early spring. The holiday of Moravian patrons was celebrated in the court parish church in the presence of all estates including the high aristocracy, prominent clergymen were invited to celebrate mass and sermons delivered on this occasion were issued in press. This rare piece of music appeared in Brno thanks to the choir director Matouš Rusmann († 1762) who was a choir member at St. Michaelis´ in 1716-1721 and knew personally many musicians from Vienna. The composition is an important example of interconnection of the music culture of Vienna and Moravia.
